BSR Fall Seminar
Come join us on Thursday, December 7th at 4pm in the Stephens Lounge of the MLK Student Union building for the Berkeley Science Review fall seminar:

Science as a Public Good: PLoS Shares Its Vision Emma Hill, Associate Editor, PLoS Biology
Liza Gross, Science Writer, PLoS Biology
Gavin Yamey, Senior Editor, PLoS Medicine and Consulting Editor, PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases

Scientific and medical research is conducted for the public good. And yet the results of this research are locked away behind access barriers, accessible only to those who can afford journal subscriptions (hundreds of dollars per year) or individual article download fees (typically $30 per article). The Public Library of Science believes that unlocking this treasury of scientific and medical knowledge could have profound implications for human and social development. The PLoS editors will discuss how open access to the biomedical literature benefits patients, health professionals, researchers, health and science policymakers, reporters, teachers, and students. This event is wheelchair accessible.

Berkeley Writers at Work seminar
Featured Speaker: Science journalist Michael Pollan Oct. 26, 12-1:30 p.m., Morrison Library, Doe Library.

Michael Pollan, Knight Professor of Journalism at the Graduate School of Journalism, is the featured writer this fall in the Berkeley Writers at Work series. In addition to many articles for the New York Times magazine and elsewhere about the "factorization" and ethics of the beef industry, Pollan is the author of three books, including "The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World." His new book, "The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals," will be published in April 2006 by the Penguin Press.

Pollan will read from his works, be interviewed about his writing process, and answer questions from the audience. The Berkeley Writers at Work series provides a forum in which campus writers can discuss all aspects of their writing, from gathering material and crafting the framework of a piece of writing, to creating a mood, editing, and revising.
