Editors, Layout Designers, for Issue 14, Spring 2008
Staff Opportunities
We are currently looking for talented individuals to
join our
Editorial board and award-winning Layout staff. Since the
BSR is a graduate student publication, all editors must be current
UC Berkeley graduate students.
Editors
Editors form the core group of the BSR and are responsible for bringing
the magazine together, which includes everything from thinking up story
ideas and working with writers to distributing the magazine and soliciting
funding. Time commitment includes one weekly meeting plus about four
hours a week.
Layout Designers
Layout designers work with the BSR Art Director to make sure the
publication is visually beautiful and consistent. This entails page layout,
researching photo permissions and credits and suggesting ways to visually enhance
stories. Some layout and design experience is preferred, but not
required. Designers come to regular meetings.
Time Commitment
We would prefer at least a year commitment to the Berkeley Science Review
for these positions. Unfortunately there is no pay involved, but the
experience is priceless.
Apply
Editorial Candidates:
Send us a cover letter, describing your interest in the position, background in writing/editing and science background. Please send 2-3 editing or writing clips (nice, but not necessary).
Layout Editor Candidates:
Send a cover letter, describing your interest
in the position and background in layout, design, photography, etc.
Send in samples of your work if you have any.
Art Director:
You should have some functional ability with Adobe InDesign, a strong
sense of graphic design, and the desire to create the best-looking
issue of the BSR yet. You do not have to be a current graduate student.
Past Art Directors have included BFAs and science graduate students,
both. Send us a cover letter, samples of past work, and a statement of purpose.
If the deadline has already passed, you can still send in your information
and we will keep you on our list should a position open up. Questions?
